Fast Play Rules

The first three titles of our Fast Play Rules (FPR) series are available now!

The first in our Fast Play Rules series of game-rules for large, big battles (900-1200 figures) with multi-players to be finished in 4 hours or less – perfect for conventions – is now ready for purchase.  It’s titled Bring Up The Guns and covers Napoleonic Wars, American Civil War and Franco-Prussian War in one rule set. The price is $10.00 + S&H ($2.00 US/Canada and $4.00 International).

Fast Play Rules also available for smaller forces on the table are: M-1’s and Arisaka’s (WWII Pacific Platoon/Squad level skirmish) and By Battalion-Volley Fire (Colonial battles of the British Empire in the nineteenth century). The price for each of these is $8.00 + S&H ($2.00 US/Canada and $4.00 International).        These rules are listed under “Other Rules” at our website.  And for the story behind the creation of the Fast Play Rules series, check out "Designer Notes".

The following is from the Maximilian War Yahoo Group  and is posted with the permission of Tim Tilson:

"I have been using modified TS&TF for about 18 months now as we play test 10 scenarios for my upcoming scenario booklet. they work pretty well. I used the Mark Fastoso modificaton with only 8 man inf unit and 6 man cavarly. About 6-10 units per side. Not a huge outlay for figures. Easy to move on the table. Games of 10 turn duration take about 3+ hours.

TS&TF are easy to teach, fluid movement, morale pretty easy (although TS&TF is a bit of a cludge with some rolls being a d6 and others being 2d6). Shooting is easy with handlfuls of d20s.

There are some holes in the rules, for example handling buildings. but you just need a good gm to handle those.

The scale is pretty fluid. for example in the Camerone scenario I use 32 figures plus 3 leaders to represent the 49 Legionairres. for Santa Gertrudis two Austiran 8 man unis represent compnaies while the Imperial 8 man units are Battalions. It all sort of works.

More New TSATF Scenarios

We'll soon have available an entirely new TSATF Scenario Portfolio, courtesy of a very talented and creative group of members of the Colonial Wars Yahoo group. Now there's no reason for you NOT to game!  Here's a preview from Christopher TenWolde, who's overseeing the Scenario Project:

"There are a number of specifically (1st) Boer War scenarios published for TSATF in one of their Scenario Packs, and there are more coming in a Scenario Pack expansion set that is just going through final editing.

I play TSATF with 10mm figures, simply putting 3 figures on a 20mm base and counting it as a single figure for the rules. Units look great this way – for instance you can model an infantry company at 1:1 with just 4 actual units. Also, for the Boers, it's very easy to field all the units as mounted and dismounted, complete with waiting mounts, in 10mm scale, or build a large wagon train to get ambushed. Remember to check ACW lines for figures that can be used for Boers.

Also, keep in mind that the Boer frontier was a very volatile place. A Boer rebellion could have broken out virtually anytime, so there is plenty of room for What If scenarios. Although the Boers provided irregular cavalry support for the British invasion of Zululand in 1879, they revolted in 1880 … what if they had double-crossed the British during the war, especially if it had gone badly for the British? The Boers also fought against the Zulus on numerous occasions, of course.

Summary: use TSATF with multiple 10mm figures per stand, get some pre-written scenarios, and remember that you can use your imagination.

Cheers,
Christopher
